Safe AI Use at Work: The SAFE Framework for Data, Accuracy and Judgment
Devdiscourses Online · September 7, 2026

Four checks that keep AI-assisted work out of trouble — what you may paste, what you must verify, and where a human decision is non-negotiable.
Most AI incidents at work are not exotic. Someone pastes a client contract into a public tool, or sends a confident paragraph containing a number the model invented.
SAFE is a four-question check you can run in about ten seconds before you use AI on any task.
S — Sensitivity
What is in the input? Customer names, salaries, health data, unreleased financials, source code, anything under NDA — these do not go into a consumer tool. Anonymise, summarise, or use an approved enterprise workspace with data retention turned off.
A — Accuracy
Which claims in the output could be wrong? Names, numbers, dates, quotes, citations and legal or medical statements are the high-risk categories. Verify each one against a source you can name. If a fact cannot be traced, delete it rather than soften it.
F — Fairness
Would this output treat a person unfairly? Anything touching hiring, performance, pricing, credit, or discipline needs a human review for bias and a written rationale that does not depend on the model.
E — Everything else is your name
You sign the work. A model cannot hold accountability. Before sending, ask whether you would defend every sentence in a meeting.
A one-page policy template
Publish this and most exposure disappears:
- Approved tools: name them explicitly.
- Never paste: the specific data categories for your business.
- Always verify: numbers, names, citations, legal claims.
- Human sign-off required for: customer-facing content, HR decisions, financial statements.
- Disclose when: AI substantially generated a published asset.
Why training beats blocking
Blocking AI tools drives usage onto personal devices where you have no visibility at all. A short, assessed course plus a clear policy gives you both adoption and an auditable record that people were trained.
The AI POWERED course covers SAFE, verification workflows and data handling in Module 1, which is free to read.
Frequently asked questions
What does SAFE stand for? Sensitivity, Accuracy, Fairness, and accountability under your own name.
What is safe AI use at work? Using approved tools, never pasting confidential data into consumer services, verifying every fact the model produces, and keeping a human accountable for anything published or decided.
What data should never go into an AI tool? Customer personal data, salaries, health records, unreleased financials, source code and anything under NDA.
Is it safe to use ChatGPT for work? It depends on the workspace and the data. An enterprise workspace with retention disabled, plus a rule about which data categories are off-limits, covers most of the risk. A personal consumer account with client data in it does not.
Do we need an AI policy? Yes, and one page is enough if it names approved tools, forbidden data, mandatory verification and who signs off.
